The 4 AM EST locate window is one of the most underused edges in active trading. Most retail platforms don't offer it. By the time the bell rings at 9:30, you can already know which hard-to-borrow names you have shares for, which ones you don't, and where you'll size in.

Here's how the pre-market locate window works at Success Trader, from when it opens through the opening bell.

How the morning unfolds

  • 4:00 AM EST — Locate window opens. Our locate vendors begin loading inventory across our coverage universe of hard-to-borrow and difficult tickers.
  • 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM EST — Inventory builds. As the morning progresses, vendors continue pushing fresh supply into the system right up to the opening bell. By 9:30 you've had over five hours to lock in your borrow.
  • If pricing or supply isn't matching what you need, we can manually source it. Our team works directly with locate providers and can hand- source shares on names where the automated feed comes up short. Call or chat our specialists and we'll work it for you.
  • 9:30 AM EST — Bell rings. You walk in already knowing what you have, what you don't, and where you'll execute.

This is one of the reasons active traders move from retail platforms to Success Trader — the locate window doesn't exist at most brokers, and where it does, the human-on-call backup usually doesn't.
